✧ The lineage of Uthman b. Affan

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَلِيفَةَ ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ الطَّوِيلُ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَقَّاصٍ قَالَ

اجْتَمَعْنَا فِي دَارِ مَخْرَمَةَ بَعْدَمَا قُتِلَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ نُرِيدُ الْبَيْعَةَ فَقَالَ أَبُو جَهْمِ بْنُ حُذَيْفَةَ إِنَّا مَنْ بَايَعَنَا مِنْكُمْ فَإِنَّا لَا نَحُولُ دُونَ قِصَاصٍ فَقَالَ عَمَّارُ بْنُ يَاسِرٍ أَمَّا مِنْ دَمِ عُثْمَانَ فَلَا فَقَالَ أَبُو جَهْمٍ يَا ابْنَ سُمَيَّةَ وَاللهِ لَتُقَادَنَّهُ مِنْ جَلَدَاتٍ جُلِدْتَهَا وَلَا يُقَادُ لِدَمِ عُثْمَانَ ؓ فَانْصَرَفُوا يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنْ غَيْرِ بَيْعَةٍ

Translation

✧ We gathered in the house of Makhrama after Uthman ؓ was killed, wanting to pledge allegiance. Abu Jahm b. Hudhayfa said: Whoever of you we give allegiance to, we will not stand in the way of retaliation. Ammar b. Yasir said: Not for the blood of Uthman. Abu Jahm said: O son of Sumayya, by Allah, retaliation will be taken from you for the lashes you were given, but no retaliation will be taken for the blood of Uthman ؓ. So they departed that day without pledging allegiance.
