✧ While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting in the courtyard of his house in Makkah, ʿUthman b. Mazʿun passed by him and smiled broadly at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, “Do not sit.” He said, “Indeed I will.” So the Messenger of Allah sat facing him. While he was speaking with him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his gaze to the sky, looked at the sky for a while, then began lowering his gaze until he fixed it on the ground to his right. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from his companion ʿUthman toward where he had fixed his gaze, and began nodding his head as if he were trying to understand what was being said to him. Ibn Mazʿun was watching. When he had accomplished what he needed and understood what was being said to him, the Messenger of Allah raised his gaze until it disappeared into the sky. Then he returned to ʿUthman in his original sitting posture and said, “O Muhammad, what was it that I was sitting with you for? I have never seen you do what you did this morning.” He said, “Did you notice that?” ʿUthman said, “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “A messenger from Allah ﷺ came to me.” “While you were sitting?” He said, “Yes.” “What did he say to you?” He said, “{Indeed Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, wrong, and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.}” ʿUthman said, “That was when faith became firmly established in my heart, and I loved Muhammad ﷺ.”
