✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, I said to a man: 'Come, let us learn from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask them, for they are many.' He said: 'How strange, by God, O Ibn Abbas! Do you think people will need you when among the people are those you see from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' So I left that and devoted myself to asking and seeking out the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. If I heard of a man who had a hadith he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would go to him and find him taking a midday nap. I would use my cloak as a pillow at his door while the wind blew dust onto my face until he came out to me. When he saw me he would say: 'O cousin of the Messenger of Allah, what is the matter?' I would say: 'A hadith has reached me that you narrate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I wanted to hear it from you.' He would say: 'Why did you not send for me so that I could come to you?' I would say: 'I was more deserving of coming to you.' Then that man would see me when the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had passed away and people needed me, and he would say: 'You were more deserving than me.'
