✧ I argued with the Qadariyyah and they cornered me, so I came to ʿImran b. al-Husayn al-Khuzaʿi, the companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and said, “O Abu Nujayd, I argued with the Qadariyyah and they cornered me. Is there a hadith you can narrate to me, perhaps Allah will benefit me by it?” He said, “Perhaps if I narrate a hadith to you, you will cover your ears as if you did not hear it.” I said, “I came only for that.” He said, “If Allah were to punish the people of the heavens and the people of the earth, He would punish them and He would not be unjust; and if He were to admit them into His mercy, His mercy would be more expansive for them than their sins. It is as Allah, Mighty and Sublime, said: {He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills}. Whoever is punished, it is the truth; and whoever is shown mercy, it is the truth. If the mountains were gold or silver for one of you and he spent them in the path of Allah, then did not believe in qadar, its good and its evil, that would not benefit him.” Then I came to ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud and asked him. ʿAbd Allah said to Ubayy b. Kaʿb, “O Abu al-Mundhir, narrate to him.” Ubayy said, “O Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥman, narrate to him.” So Ibn Masʿud narrated the like of the hadith of ʿImran b. Husayn from the Prophet ﷺ, and upon his family, with abundant, good, blessed peace.
