✧ “From which people is the man?” I said, “A man from the people of Basra.” He said, “From which tribe?” I said, “From this clan of Banu Saʿd.” He said to me, “O Saʿdi, I will narrate to you a hadith about you which I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, shall I not guide you to a people of great wealth and great strength, from whom you may take abundant property—or he said, much property?’ He said, ‘Who are they?’ He said, ‘They are this clan of Banu Saʿd from the people of the sands.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Indeed Banu Saʿd have a great share with Allah.’ Ask, O Saʿdi.” I said, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, is there any knowledge by which the Hour is known?” He was reclining, and he sat up straight and said, “O Saʿdi, you have asked me about something I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, is there any knowledge by which the Hour is known?’ He said to me, ‘O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed the Hour has signs, and indeed the Hour has portents. Indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that the child becomes a source of anger, and that the rain becomes scorching heat, and that the wicked overflow in abundance. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that the liar is believed and the truthful is rejected. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that the treacherous is entrusted and the trustworthy is betrayed. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that close relatives sever ties and wombs are cut off. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that every tribe is ruled by its hypocrites and every market by its wicked. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that mosques are adorned and hearts are ruined. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that a believer in his tribe is more humiliated than a stray sheep. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that men suffice with men and women with women. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that mosques become crowded and pulpits are raised. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that the ruins of the world are built up and its inhabited places are ruined. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that musical instruments appear and wine is drunk. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is the drinking of wine. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour are the police, the slanderers, and the backbiters. O Ibn Masʿūd, indeed among the signs and portents of the Hour is that children born of fornication become many.’” I said, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, while they are Muslims?” He said, “Yes.” I said, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, while the Qur’an is among them?” He said, “Yes.” I said, “Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, how can that be?” He said, “A time will come upon people when a man divorces his wife, then denies her divorce and remains upon her private part, so the two of them are fornicators as long as they remain.”
