✧ On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took the captives and said: “What do you think?” Umar said: “O Messenger of Allah, they belied you and expelled you; strike their necks.” Abdullah b. Rawahah said: “O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley with much firewood; set it ablaze and throw them into it.” Al-Abbas said: “May Allah sever your kinship.” Abu Bakr said: “O Messenger of Allah, they are your kin, your root, and your people. Overlook them; Allah will save them from the Fire through you.” He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered, and some said the opinion was what Abu Bakr said, and others said the opinion was what Umar said. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said: “What do you say about these two men? Their likeness is that of brothers they had before them. Nuh said: {My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any inhabitant from among the disbelievers}. Musa said: {Our Lord, obliterate their wealth}. Isa said: {If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, You are the Mighty, the Wise}. Ibrahim said: {Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me—indeed You are Forgiving and Merciful}. Allah hardens the hearts of men in it until they are harder than stones, and He softens the hearts of men in it until they are softer than softness. You are in need, and none of them will depart except with ransom or a blow to the neck.” Abdullah said: I said: “Except Suhayl b. Bayda'.” Abdullah said: I had heard him mention Islam, so he fell silent. I kept looking at the sky, waiting for stones to fall on me. I said: I put the words before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until he said: “Except Suhayl b. Bayda'.”
