حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْبُسْتَنْبَانُ السُّرْمَرِيُّ بِهَا، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعْدَانُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ صَاحِبُ السَّابِرِيِّ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ:

دَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلَى أُمِّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ يَوْمَ الْفَتْحِ، وَكَانَ جَائِعًا، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّ أَصْهَارًا لِي قَدْ لَجَئُوا إِلَيَّ، وَإِنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ فِي اللهِ لَوْمَةُ لَائِمٍ، وَإِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يَعْلَمَ بِهِمْ فَيَقْتُلَهُمْ، فَاجْعَلْ مَنْ دَخَلَ دَارَ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ آمِنًا حَتَّى يَسْمَعَ كَلَامَ اللهِ ! فَآمَنَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: قَدْ أَجَرْنَا مَنْ أَجَارَتْ أُمُّ هَانِئٍ ! " فَقَالَ: " هَلْ عِنْدَكِ مِنْ طَعَامٍ نَأْكُلُهُ ؟ " فَقَالَتْ: لَيْسَ عِنْدِي إِلَّا كِسَرٌ يَابِسَةٌ، وَإِنِّي لَأَسْتَحِي أَنْ أُقَدِّمَهَا إِلَيْكَ ! فَقَالَ: " هَلُمِّي بِهِنَّ "، فَكَسَّرَهُنَّ فِي مَاءٍ، وَجَاءَتْ بِمِلْحٍ، فَقَالَ: " هَلْ مِنْ إِدَامٍ ؟ " فَقَالَتْ: مَا عِنْدِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِلَّا شَيْءٌ مِنْ خَلٍّ ! فَقَالَ: " هَلُمِّيهِ ". فَصَبَّهُ عَلَى طَعَامِهِ، فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ، ثُمَّ حَمِدَ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: " نِعْمَ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ ! يَا أُمَّ هَانِئٍ، لَا يُقْفِرُ بَيْتٌ فِيهِ خَلٌّ

✧ On the day of the conquest, the Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon Umm Hani’ bt. Abi Talib, and he was hungry. She said to him, “O Messenger of God, some in-laws of mine have sought refuge with me, and ‘Ali b. Abi Talib is not deterred by any critic’s reproach in the cause of God, and I fear that he will find out about them and kill them. So grant safety to whoever enters the house of Umm Hani’ until he hears the word of God!” So the Messenger of God ﷺ granted them safety and said, “We have granted protection to whomever Umm Hani’ has granted protection!” Then he said, “Do you have any food for us to eat?” She said, “I have nothing but dry pieces of bread, and I am embarrassed to offer them to you.” He said, “Bring them,” and he broke them into water, and she brought salt. He said, “Is there any condiment?” She said, “I have nothing but a little vinegar, O Messenger of God.” He said, “Bring it.” She poured it over his food, and he ate from it, then praised God, Mighty and Majestic, and said, “How excellent a condiment vinegar is! O Umm Hani’, no house that has vinegar will be devoid of sustenance.”
