✧ The leaders are from Quraysh: their righteous ones are rulers over their righteous, and their wicked ones are rulers over their wicked. Each has a right, so give everyone with a right his due. If an Ethiopian slave with mutilated limbs is appointed over you, listen to him and obey as long as none of you is forced to choose between his Islam and the striking of his neck. If he is forced to choose between his Islam and the striking of his neck, let him stretch forth his neck, may his mother be bereft of him, for there is no worldly life or Hereafter after losing his Islam [his religion].

machine translationMisʿar narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Fayḍ b. al-Faḍl raised it (to the Prophet) from Misʿar, from Salamah b. Kuhayl, from Abū Ṣādiq, from Rabīʿah b. Nājid, from ʿAlī, from the Prophet ﷺ. Dāwūd b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār differed from him and narrated it from Misʿar, from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah, from Abū Ṣādiq, and he also raised it. Others besides them narrate it from Misʿar as a statement of the Companion (mawqūf). Likewise Abū ʿAwānah narrated it from ʿUthmān b. al-Mughīrah as mawqūf. The mawqūf report is closer to being correct.
