✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent us with Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah, and we were six hundred and some odd men, to intercept a caravan of Quraysh. The Messenger of God ﷺ found no provision for us except a bag of dates. He would give us one date each day, which we would suck and then drink water over it. We felt its loss when it was exhausted. Then we turned to the leaves of trees, striking them with our sticks, then we would grind them and drink water over it, until we were called the Army of the Leaves. We passed by the seashore, and the sea cast up for us a creature called al-'anbar, like a large sand dune. Abu 'Ubaydah said: 'It is carrion, not lawful for us.' Then he later said: 'Rather, we are in the path of God, and we are compelled.' So we ate from it for about half a month and more, and we cut many strips from it. We would scoop the fat from the place of its eye with jars until we finished it. Then thirteen of our men sat in the place of its eye. Then Abu 'Ubaydah took one of its ribs, set it up on its two ends, ordered the tallest camel in the caravan, and had it saddled. A man rode on it and passed beneath the rib without his head touching it. We came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: 'Do you have any of it with you?' We said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Feed us from it.' We sent him a strip, and he ate from it.
