✧ Arbad b. Qays b. Juzayy b. Khalid b. Ja'far b. Kilab and 'Amir b. al-Tufayl b. Malik b. Ja'far came to Madinah to the Messenger of God ﷺ. They came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was sitting, and they sat before him. 'Amir b. al-Tufayl said: “O Muhammad, what will you give me if I become Muslim?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “You will have what the Muslims have, and you will owe what they owe.” 'Amir said: “Will you give me the command after you if I become Muslim?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “You will have what the Muslims have, and you will owe what they owe.” 'Amir said: “Will you give me the command after you if I become Muslim?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “That is not for you or for your people, but you may have the reins of the horses.” He said: “I now have the reins of the horses being dragged. Give me the nomads and you keep the settled people.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “No.” When Arbad and 'Amir left, 'Amir said: “O Arbad, I will distract Muhammad with talk while you strike him with the sword. If you kill Muhammad, the people will not do more than accept blood money and dislike war, and we will give them the blood money.” Arbad said: “I will do it.” They came back to him, and 'Amir said: “O Muhammad, come with me so I may speak with you.” The Messenger of God ﷺ stood with him, leaning against the wall, and the Messenger of God ﷺ stood with him talking to him. Arbad drew the sword, but when he put his hand on the sword, it stuck to the hilt, and he could not draw it. Arbad delayed striking 'Amir, and the Messenger of God ﷺ turned and saw 'Amir and what he was doing, so he left them. When 'Amir and Arbad left the Messenger of God ﷺ, they went until they were at al-Harrah—the Harrah of Banu Waqim—and they dismounted. Sa'd b. Mu'adh and Usayd b. Hudayr came out to them and said: “Depart, O enemies of God!” 'Amir said: “Who is this, O Sa'd?” He said: “Usayd b. Hudayr, the one of the battalions.” They left, and when they were at al-Raqm, God sent a thunderbolt upon Arbad and it killed him. 'Amir went on until he was at al-Khuraym, and God sent an ulcer that afflicted him. Night overtook him in the house of a woman from Banu Sulul, and he began touching the ulcer in his throat and saying: “A gland like the gland of a camel in the house of a Sululi woman,” wishing that he would die in her house. Then he mounted his horse and spurred it until he died on it while returning. Then it was revealed concerning them: “God knows what every female carries and what the wombs decrease or increase…” up to His saying: “…and they have no protector besides Him” (Q 13:8-11). He said: The guardian angels from the command of God protect Muhammad ﷺ. Then He mentioned Arbad and what killed him, saying: “It is He who shows you the lightning, causing fear and hope…” up to His saying: “…and He is mighty in strength” (Q 13:12-13).
