✧ When someone died, the people would bring him to the Messenger of God ﷺ so that he could pray over him. He would ask: 'Does he owe any debt?' If they said yes, he would ask: 'Did he leave anything to pay off his debt?' If they said yes, he would pray over him; otherwise he would say: 'Pray over your companion.' When God granted him the conquests, he said: 'I am closer to the believers than their own selves. Whoever dies owing a debt, it is upon us; and whoever leaves wealth, it is for his heirs.'

Yazīd and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAmr al-Awzāʿī narrated it, and there is disagreement about al-Awzāʿī, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah. Al-Walīd b. Likewise Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it from al-Zuhrī as a mursal report. Muḥammad b. Abī Ḥafṣah narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah.
