✧ I asked Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, “Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about this verse: ‘Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims’?” He said, “Yes, I heard him say: Allah will bring out people from the believers from the Fire after He has taken His vengeance from them. He said: When Allah admitted them into the Fire with the polytheists, the polytheists said to them, ‘You claimed that you were the allies of Allah in this world, so what is the matter with you that you are with us in the Fire?’ When Allah heard that from them, He permitted intercession for them. The angels and the prophets intercede, and the believers intercede until they come out by Allah’s permission. When the polytheists see that, they say, ‘Would that we were like them and intercession would reach us and we would come out with them.’” He said, “That is the saying of Allah: ‘Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.’ They will be called in Paradise the Jahannamīs because of blackness in their faces. They will say, ‘Our Lord, remove this name from us.’ Then He will command them, and they will bathe in a river of Paradise, and that name will be removed from them.”
