حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودٌ، ثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى زَحْمَوَيْهِ، ثَنَا صَالِحُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ طَرِيفٍ، عَنْ بَشِيرِ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ، عَنْ كَثِيرِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ مَوْلَى عَائِشَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ:
قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ سَحْرِي وَنَحْرِي قَالَتْ: " وَظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سَيَرُدُّ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ رُوحَهُ "، قَالَتْ: " وَكَذَلِكَ يَفْعَلُ بِالْأَنْبِيَاءِ "، فَتَحَرَّكَ، فَقُلْتُ: " إِنْ خُيِّرْتَ الْيَوْمَ فَلَنْ تَخْتَارَنَا ". وَقِيلَ: ذَلِكَ مَا قَالَ لِبِلَالٍ: " مُرْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَلْيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ، إِنَّكُنَّ صَوَاحِبَاتُ يُوسُفَ "، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنَّمَا قُلْتُ ذَلِكَ أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ رَجُلٌ رَقِيقٌ، وَإِذَا قَامَ مَقَامَكَ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ.

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away between my chest and my throat. She said: "I thought that Allah would return his soul to him." She said: "And that is how it is done with the prophets." He stirred, so I said: "If you are given the choice today, you will not choose us." And it was said: That is what he said to Bilal: "Order Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You women are like the companions of Yusuf." So I said: O Messenger of Allah, I only said that because Abu Bakr is a tender-hearted man, and if he stands in your place he will not be able to pray.
