✧ Among the past nations there was a man called Muwarriq, who was devout. While he was standing in prayer, he thought of women and desired them, and he became erect until he broke off his prayer. He became angry, took his bow, cut its string, and tied it around his testicles, fastening it to his heels. Then he stretched his legs and pulled them off. Then he took his two worn garments and his sandals and went to a land with no human or wild animal. He made a hut and began praying. Every morning the earth split open and something came out with a vessel containing food, and he ate until he was full. Then it went in and came out with a vessel containing drink, and he drank until he was satisfied. Then it went in and the earth closed up. In the evening, the same thing happened. He said: Some people passed near him, and two men from the group came to him and passed by him at night. They asked him about their destination, and he pointed with his hand, saying: 'This is your destination,' and said: 'This is your destination where you want to go.' They traveled a short distance, and one of them said: 'What makes this man stay here, in a land with no human or wild animal? If only we returned to him to learn his knowledge.' They returned and said to him: 'O servant of Allah, what makes you stay in this place, a land with no human or wild animal?' He said: 'Go about your business and leave me.' They refused and insisted. He said: 'I will tell you on condition that whoever of you conceals it from me, Allah will honor him in this world and the Hereafter, and whoever of you reveals it about me, Allah will disgrace him in this world and the Hereafter.' They said: 'Yes.' So they dismounted. When morning came, the one came out from the earth with the same amount of food as usual and twice as much, and they ate until they were full. Then it went in and came out to them with drink in a vessel like the one it used to bring every day and twice as much, and they drank until they were satisfied. Then it went in and the earth closed up. One of them looked at his companion and said: 'Why should we hurry? This is food and drink, and we know our direction. Stay until evening.' So they stayed, and in the evening it brought out to them the same as it had at the beginning of the day. One of them said to his companion: 'Stay with us until morning.' So they stayed. In the morning, it brought out the same to them. Then they mounted and left. One of them stayed at the king's gate until he became one of his close companions and nightly entertainers. The other turned to his trade and work. That king would not let anyone in his kingdom who told a known lie go unpunished except by crucifixion. While they were one night in the evening gathering telling him about the wonders they had seen, that man began to narrate. He said: 'I will tell you, O king, a story more amazing than anything you have ever heard.' He told the story of the man whose affair he had witnessed. The king said: 'I have never heard a greater lie than this. By Allah, you must bring me proof of what you said, or I will crucify you.' He said: 'My proof is so-and-so.' He said: 'Agreed. Bring him to me.' When he came, the king said to him: 'This man claims that you passed by a man, and then such and such happened.' The man said: 'O king, do you not know that this is a lie? This is something that cannot happen. If I told you this, it would be right for you to crucify me for it.' He said: 'You have spoken the truth and acted rightly.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The man who concealed it was admitted into his close companions and nightly entertainers, and the other was ordered to be crucified.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The one of them who concealed it, Allah honored him in this world and the Hereafter, and the one who revealed it, Allah disgraced him in this world, and He will disgrace him in the Hereafter.' Then Bakr b. Abdullah looked at Thumamah b. Abdullah b. Anas and said: 'O Abu al-Muthanna, did you hear your grandfather narrate this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.'
