✧ We were with Abdullah b. Umar when a man from the people of Kufa asked him: 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, tell me about Uthman b. Affan: did he witness the Battle of Badr?' He said: 'No.' The man said: 'Allah is greatest.' He then asked: 'Tell me, was Uthman among those who turned back on the day the two armies met?' He said: 'Yes.' The man said: 'Allah is greatest.' He then asked: 'Tell me, did Uthman witness the Day of the Pledge of Ridwan?' He said: 'No.' The man said: 'Allah is greatest,' and then left. I said to Ibn Umar - while still in my place: 'This man is from Kufa, and they love Ali and hate Uthman.' He said: 'Bring the man back to me.' So he was brought. Ibn Umar said: 'You asked me whether Uthman witnessed Badr, and I told you no, but I will tell you about that: the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was ill, and the Prophet ﷺ said to him: "Stay behind to care for my daughter?" He replied: "As you wish." The Prophet ﷺ then said: "It is dearer to me that you stay behind to care for her." And he assigned him a share and a reward equal to one who was present, so say one: "Allah is greatest." As for your saying that he was among those who turned back on the day the two armies met, Allah has informed us that He pardoned them, so say two: "Allah is greatest." As for your saying that he did not witness the Pledge of Ridwan, the Prophet ﷺ had sent Uthman to the people of Makkah. When he ordered the pledge, the Prophet ﷺ said: "O Allah, Uthman is on Your business and the business of Your Messenger. This is my hand, and this is the hand of Uthman," and he struck one of his hands with the other, pledging on his behalf.'
