✧ Do not boast of your forefathers who died in the Jahiliyyah—do you boast of them? Shall I not tell you? The likeness of your forefathers who died in the Jahiliyyah is that of a king who built a palace on the main road, prepared food in it, and appointed men to it, saying: 'No one shall pass unless he partakes of this food of mine.' So when a man passed in fine appearance and fine clothes, they would go to him, cling to him, and bring him until he ate from that food. And when a man came in shabby appearance and worn clothes, they would prevent him. When that went on for a long time, Allah sent an angel from among the angels in shabby appearance and worn clothes, and he passed by their side. They rose to him and pushed him away. He said to them: 'I am hungry, and food is prepared only for the hungry.' They said: 'No, the king's food is eaten only by the righteous,' and they pushed him away, so he left. Then he came in a handsome form and fine clothes, and passed by as if he did not want them, at a distance from them. They went to him, clung to him, and said: 'Come, partake of the king's food.' He said: 'I do not want it.' They said: 'We will not leave you; if it reaches the king that someone like you passed and did not partake of his food, it would be hard on him, and we fear that punishment from him might befall us.' So they compelled him and brought him in until they came with him to the food and brought the food near to him. Then he did thus with his clothes in the food. They said: 'What are you doing?' He said: 'I came to you in shabby appearance and worn clothes, and I told you that I was hungry, but you prevented me. And I came to you in fine appearance and fine clothes, and you compelled me and overcame me and refused to leave me. May Allah disfigure you and disfigure your king! Your king prepares this food only for this world, and he has no share with Allah.' He said: Then the angel ascended, and punishment descended upon them.
