✧ We were at a watering place on the road, and caravans of those who had met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pass by us. I asked them to recite the Qur’an, until I had learned a great deal of Qur’an. My father went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group from the tribe. When they returned, they said: “We were commanded such and such, and we were commanded that the one among us with the most Qur’an should lead us in prayer.” They looked at the people of the watering place, and I was the one with the most Qur’an, so they put me forward. I was wearing a striped cloak, and when I prostrated it almost reached my buttocks. A woman from the tribe said: “Cover from us the private parts of this reciter of yours.” So they bought me a garment from this lot, and a woman from the tribe cut it into a shirt for me, and they clothed me with it. I rejoiced over it as I had never rejoiced over anything like it. I used to lead them in prayer, and at that time I was eight years old.
