✧ I was asking people about Adi b. Hatim while he was beside me in Kufa. I went to him and said: "What is this hadith that has reached me from you?" He said: "The Prophet ﷺ was sent when he was sent, and I was among the people who most detested him, until I fled and reached the land of Syria. While I was in that state, news reached us that Khalid b. al-Walid had been dispatched against us. I fled until I reached the land of the Byzantines. While I was sitting in the shade of a wall, a woman in a howdah approached. I went to her and found she was my aunt. She said: 'O Adi b. Hatim, you fled and left me. As soon as you left us, Khalid b. al-Walid raided us in the morning, took the women and children captive, and killed the fighters. They took us until we came to Madinah. One day as I was sitting, the Prophet ﷺ passed by me on his way to prayer. I said: "O Muhammad, the father has perished and the one who should come has fled. Free me, may Allah free you." He said: "Who is your one who should come?" I said: "Adi b. Hatim." He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger?" and went on. The next day he passed by me on his way to prayer. I said: "O Muhammad, the father has perished and the one who should come has fled. Free me, may Allah free you." He said: "Who is your one who should come?" I said: "Adi b. Hatim." He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger," and went on without answering me. On the third day he passed by, and I was too shy to say anything to him. Ali b. Abi Talib nudged me, so I said: "O Muhammad, the father has perished and the one who should come has fled. Free me, may Allah free you." He said: "Who is your one who should come?" I said: "Adi b. Hatim." He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger." I said: "Yes." He said: "Allah has freed you. Stay here and do not leave until something comes to us so we can equip you." I stayed three days. Then a caravan from Sarh arrived carrying food. He mounted me on this camel and gave me provisions. "O Adi b. Hatim, go to him, go to him, and take your share from him before someone unlike you from your people beats you to it." So I set out until I came to Madinah. The people looked at me and said, "Adi b. Hatim has come." I went to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: "O Adi b. Hatim, are you the one who fled from Allah and His Messenger?" I said: "I have a religion." He said: "I know your religion better than you. Are you not a Rakusi? Are you not a chief of your people? Do you not take a quarter of the spoils?" I felt ashamed. He said: "Nothing prevents you from submitting except that you see those around us in need, and you see people united against us. O Adi, the time is near when a woman will travel from al-Hirah to the House without any protection, and the time is near when the treasures of Kisra will be opened for us." I said: "Kisra b. Hurmuz?" He said: "Kisra b. Hurmuz. And the time is near when a man will take out his charity and not find anyone to accept it from him." He said: "I was among the first cavalry to raid the treasures of Kisra, and I saw a woman travel from al-Hirah until she reached Makkah without any protection. By Allah, the third will surely happen, for the word of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is true."
