✧ I persisted in it for more than two years, performing a full bath every Friday night, praying two rak'ahs in which I recited 'Say: He is God, the One' a thousand times, out of longing to see the Prophet ﷺ in a dream. Then one Friday night I prayed two rak'ahs and recited in them 'Say: He is God, the One' a thousand times. When I lay down, I had a seminal emission, so I got up, performed a full bath, and prayed two rak'ahs in which I recited 'Say: He is God, the One' a thousand times. When I finished them, it was the time of predawn. I leaned against the wall with my face toward the qiblah. Then the Prophet ﷺ entered upon me in his described form and attributes, wearing two cloaks of these Yemeni cloaks, having wrapped one around his waist and thrown the other over his shoulder. He came and stood on his left leg, keeping the right one raised. Muhammad b. 'Ukkasha said: I wanted to say, 'May God greet you,' but he preceded me and said, 'May God greet you.' I had been longing to see his broken front tooth, so the Messenger of God ﷺ smiled, and I looked at his broken front tooth. I said: O Messenger of God, the jurists have confused me, and I have two fundamental principles of the Sunnah. May I present them to you? He said: Yes. I said: Acceptance of God's decree, submission to God's command, patience with His ruling, taking what God has commanded, refraining from what God has forbidden, sincere devotion in action for God, faith in destiny, its good and its evil from God, abandoning disputation and quarrels in religion, wiping over the leather socks, waging jihad with every caliph, performing the Friday prayer with every righteous and wicked person, praying over whoever dies from among the people of the qiblah, faith being statement and action that increases and decreases, the Quran being the speech of God uncreated, patience under the banner of the ruler whether he is just or unjust, not revolting against rulers with the sword even if they are unjust, not assigning any of the people of the qiblah to Paradise or Hell, not declaring any of the people of monotheism an unbeliever even if they commit major sins, refraining from speaking ill of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the best of people after the Messenger of God ﷺ being Abu Bakr, then 'Umar. Muhammad b. 'Ukkasha said: I paused at 'Uthman and 'Ali, for I held the Prophet ﷺ in too much awe to prefer 'Uthman over 'Ali. I said to myself: 'Ali is his cousin, and 'Uthman is his son-in-law. The Messenger of God ﷺ smiled as if he knew, then said: 'Uthman, then 'Ali. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: This is the Sunnah; hold fast to it. He clasped his fingers and made a count of ninety-three, pressing his thumb over his fingers. Muhammad b. 'Ukkasha said: I presented these principles to him for three nights; each night I would pause at 'Ali and 'Uthman, and he would smile when I paused, as if he knew ﷺ, then he would say: 'Uthman, then 'Ali; hold fast to it. Muhammad b. 'Ukkasha said: I was presenting these principles to him while his eyes were streaming with tears. When I said, 'And refraining from speaking ill of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ,' he sobbed until his voice rose ﷺ. Muhammad b. 'Ukkasha said: After my vision I found a sweetness in my mouth and heart, so for eight days I did not eat any food until I became too weak to perform the obligatory prayer. When I ate food, that sweetness left my mouth.
