✧ Do you not know that the forbearing person was nearly a prophet? Then he turned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: By al-Lat and al-'Uzza, I will not believe in you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to him: O Bedouin, what made you say what you said? You have spoken untruth and not honored my assembly. He said: And you still speak to me—showing contempt for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—by al-Lat and al-'Uzza, I will not believe in you, or this lizard will believe in you. He brought out a lizard from his sleeve and threw it before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying: If this lizard believes in you, I will believe in you. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O lizard. The lizard spoke in clear Arabic speech, understood by all the people: At your service, at your service, O Messenger of the Lord of the worlds. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to it: Whom do you worship? It said: The One whose Throne is in the heaven, whose authority is in the earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire. He said: Who am I, O lizard? It said: You are the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds and the Seal of the Prophets. Whoever believes in you has succeeded, and whoever denies you has failed. The Bedouin said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are truly the Messenger of Allah. I came to you when there was no one on the face of the earth more hateful to me than you, and by Allah, you are now more beloved to me than myself and my parents. I have believed in you with my hair, my skin, my inner being, my outer being, my secret, and my public. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: Praise be to Allah who has guided you to this religion that prevails and is not prevailed upon. Allah does not accept it except with prayer, and He does not accept prayer except with the Qur'an. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him al-Hamd and Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad. He said: O Messenger of Allah, I have never heard in al-basit or in al-rajaz anything more beautiful than this. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: This is the speech of the Lord of the worlds, not poetry. When you recite Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad once, it is as if you have recited a third of the Qur'an; when you recite it twice, it is as if you have recited two-thirds; and when you recite it three times, it is as if you have recited the entire Qur'an. The Bedouin said: What an excellent god our God is: He accepts the little and gives the abundant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Give to the Bedouin. So they gave him until they made him giddy. 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Awf stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to give him a she-camel by which I seek nearness to Allah, below the Bukhti breed and above the Bedouin breed, and she is ten months pregnant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You have described what you will give; shall I describe to you what Allah will give you as reward? He said: Yes. He said: You will have a she-camel of hollow pearl, its legs of green emerald, its neck of yellow chrysolite, upon it a howdah, and upon the howdah fine silk and brocade. It will pass over the Bridge like flashing lightning. The Bedouin left the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and met a thousand Bedouins on a thousand mounts, with a thousand spears and a thousand swords. He said to them: Where are you heading? They said: We are going to fight this one who lies and claims to be a prophet. The Bedouin said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. They said to him: Have you turned renegade? He said: I have not turned renegade. He told them the story, and they all said: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. This reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he met them without a cloak. They dismounted from their riding animals, kissing what they turned toward of him, saying: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. They said: Command us with something that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loves. He said: You will be under the banner of Khalid b. al-Walid. He said: No group from the Arabs believed as they did—a thousand men altogether—except Banu Sulaym. No one narrated this hadith in its complete form from Dawud b. Abi Hind except Kahmas, and no one from Kahmas except Mu'tamir. Muhammad b. 'Abd al-A'la was alone in narrating it.
