✧ He was on a journey and heard a caller saying: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. He said: Upon the fitrah. Then he said: Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah. He said: He has come out of the Fire. The people hastened to him, and behold, it was a shepherd of sheep; when the prayer time arrived, he gave the adhan.

machine translationḤumayd al-Ṭawīl, Khulayd b. Daʿlaj and Yūsuf b. ʿAṭiyyah al-Ṣaffār narrate it from Qatādah, from Anas. There is disagreement (ikhtilāf) about Qatādah: Sallām b. Miskīn narrated it from Qatādah, from a companion of his, from ʿAlqamah, from Ibn Masʿūd. Muʿādh b. Muʿādh and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥuṣayn narrated it from Ibn Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, from ʿAbdullāh, and they did not mention ʿAlqamah. Likewise Maṭar al-Warrāq and ʿImrān al-Qaṭṭān narrated it from Qatādah, from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, from ʿAbdullāh. And Ayyūb b. Abī Miskīn Abū al-ʿAlāʾ narrated it from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Ibn Masʿūd. The closest of them to being correct is the report of Muʿādh b. Muʿādh.
