✧ The Prophet of God ﷺ sat in one of the rooms of his wives, and ʿA'ishah was with him. A group of Jews entered upon him and said, 'Al-sam ʿalayka, O Muhammad.' He said, 'And upon you.' They sat and conversed. ʿA'ishah understood their greeting by which they had greeted the Prophet ﷺ, so she gathered her anger and was patient, but she could not control her rage and said, 'Rather upon you be al-sam and the wrath of God and His curse! Is this how you greet the Prophet of God ﷺ?' Then they left. The Prophet ﷺ said to her, 'What made you say what you said?' She said, 'Did you not hear how they greeted you, O Messenger of God? By God, I could not control myself when I heard their greeting to you.' The Prophet ﷺ said to her, 'No doubt. How did you see me respond to them? Indeed, the Jews are a people who have grown weary of their religion, and they are an envious people. They have not envied the Muslims for anything more excellent than three things: returning the greeting, establishing the rows, and their saying behind their imam in the prescribed prayer: Amin.'
