✧ I set out seeking knowledge until I reached Kufah, and there was Abdullah b. Mas'ud among the people of Kufah. I asked about him and was directed to him. He was in the main mosque. I came to him and said: 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, I have come to you seeking knowledge from you, hoping that Allah may benefit us by it after you.' He said to me: 'What tribe are you from?' I said: 'A man from the people of Basrah.' He said: 'From which clan?' I said: 'From this branch of Banu Sa'd.' He said to me: 'O Sa'di, I shall narrate to you a hadith concerning you that I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not direct you to a people who have abundant wealth and great strength, from whom you can seize wealth as booty?" Or he said: "abundant?" He said: "Who are they?" The man said: "This branch of Banu Sa'd, from the people of the sands." The Messenger of Allah said: "Stop! For Banu Sa'd have a great share with Allah." Ask, O Sa'di.' I said: 'Abu Abd al-Rahman, is there any knowledge by which the Hour may be known?' He said—and he had been reclining, so he sat up straight—: 'O Sa'di, you have asked me about what I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, is there any knowledge by which the Hour may be known?" He said: "Yes, O Ibn Mas'ud. The Hour has signs, and the Hour has portents. Indeed, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that a child will be a cause of anger, rain will be a cause of heat, and the nobles will overflow in abundance. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that the treacherous will be trusted and the trustworthy will be betrayed. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that ties of kinship will be maintained among the wicked and severed among the righteous. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that every tribe will be led by its hypocrites and every market by its wicked. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that mihrabs will be distorted and hearts will be ruined. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that a believer in a tribe will be more lowly than a weak lamb. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that men will suffice with men and women with women. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is the rule of boys and the consultation of women. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that mosques will be crowded and pulpits will be elevated. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that the ruins of the world will be inhabited and its inhabited places ruined. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that musical instruments, pride, and wine-drinking will appear. O Ibn Mas'ud, among the signs and portents of the Hour is that children of fornication will abound."' I said: 'Abu Abd al-Rahman, will they be Muslims?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Abu Abd al-Rahman, and the Quran will be among them?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Abu Abd al-Rahman, how will that be?' He said: 'A time will come upon people when a man divorces his wife, then denies her divorce and continues to have intercourse with her. They are both adulterers as long as they remain so.'
