✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ captured us on the day of Hunayn, the day of Hawazin, and went to distribute the spoils and the sheep, I recited this poetry to him: Bestow favor upon us, O Messenger of God, in generosity; for you are the man we hope in and await. Bestow favor upon a remnant whom fate has hindered, whose unity is scattered, and whose times have brought changes. Time has left us a wailing voice over grief, upon their hearts are gloom and overwhelming sorrow. If you do not rescue them with a blessing you spread, O most forbearing of people when tested, bestow favor upon women whom you used to suckle, when your mouth was filled with the rich milk of their breasts. When you were a small child, you used to suckle from them, and what you do and leave adorns you. Do not make us like one whose ostrich has fled, but preserve us, for we are a noble group. We are grateful for blessings even when others are ungrateful, and after this day we have something stored up. Clothe with pardon those whom you used to suckle from their mothers, for pardon is well known. O best of those whom dark bay steeds pranced with, at the time of battle when sparks blaze. We hope for pardon from you which you will wear; this creation is pardoned when you pardon and take victory. So pardon us, may God pardon what you fear on the Day of Resurrection when victory is brought to you. When he heard this poetry, he said: What belonged to me and to the Banu Abd al-Muttalib is yours. Quraysh said: What belonged to us is for God and His Messenger. The Ansar said: What belonged to us is for God and His Messenger.
