✧ I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and he said: O Ibn Masʿud, which bond of faith is firmest? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: The firmest bond of Islam is allegiance for the sake of Allah, love for His sake, and hatred for His sake. Then he said: O Ibn Masʿud. I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah. He said it three times. He said: Do you know which of the people is best? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: The best of people are the best of them in deeds when they have understanding in their religion. Then he said: O Ibn Masʿud. I said: At your service, O Messenger of Allah, three times. He said: Do you know which of the people is most knowledgeable? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: The most knowledgeable of people is the one most perceptive of the truth when people differ, even if he is deficient in deeds, and even if he crawls on his backside. Those before me divided into seventy-two sects; three of them were saved and the rest perished. A sect that sided with the kings and fought them for their religion and the religion of Jesus son of Mary; they seized them, killed them, and cut them with saws. A sect that had no power to oppose the kings nor to remain among them calling them to the religion of Allah and the religion of Jesus son of Mary, so they wandered in the lands and became monks. He said: They are those of whom Allah said: And monasticism, which they innovated; We did not prescribe it for them—the verse. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever believes in me, follows me, and has affirmed me has observed it as it should be observed, and whoever does not follow me, those are the ones who perish.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThis is a mistake; it is only al-Ṣaʿq b. Ḥazn, from ʿAqīl al-Jaʿdī, from Abū Isḥāq, and Ḥarb has no place in it. The hadith itself is rejected (munkar) and does not resemble the hadith of Abū Isḥāq. It seems that this ʿAqīl was a Bedouin, and as for al-Ṣaʿq, there is no harm in him.
