✧ When the last ten nights of Ramadan came, the Prophet ﷺ observed iʿtikāf in the mosque. After the Prophet ﷺ prayed the ʿAṣr prayer on the twenty-second day, he said: 'We shall stand in prayer tonight, if God wills. Whoever wishes to stand, let him stand.' That was the night of the twenty-third. The Prophet ﷺ led us in congregational prayer after the evening prayer until a third of the night had passed, then he left. On the night of the twenty-fourth, he did not say anything and did not stand. On the night of the twenty-fifth, he stood after the ʿAṣr prayer on the twenty-fourth day and said: 'We shall stand tonight, if God wills'—meaning the night of the twenty-fifth—'whoever wishes, let him stand.' The Prophet ﷺ prayed until half the night had passed. On the night of the twenty-sixth, he stood and said: 'We shall stand, if God wills'—meaning the night of the twenty-seventh—'whoever wishes to stand, let him stand.' Abū Dharr said: We steeled ourselves for the night prayer. The Prophet ﷺ led us until two-thirds of the night had passed, then he went to a tent in the mosque. I said to him: 'We had hoped, O Messenger of God, that you would lead us until morning.' He said: 'O Abū Dharr, if you pray with your imam and leave when he leaves, the qunūt of your night will be recorded for you.'
