✧ I entered upon Shaddad b. Aws while he was weeping. I said, “What makes you weep?” He said, “Two hadiths I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” I said, “What are they?” He said, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to me, and I saw in his face something that grieved me. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is this that I see in your face?’ He said, ‘Two matters I fear for my community after me: shirk and hidden desire. Indeed, they will not worship a sun, nor a moon, nor an idol, but they will show off in their deeds.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, is that shirk?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘And what is hidden desire?’ He said, ‘A man begins the day fasting, then one of his desires presents itself to him, and he goes along with it and abandons the fast.’”
