✧ The Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ were afflicted by hunger during his time. Two men approached until they overlooked some orchards, and there were dates in one of the orchards. One of them went down, and the other was afraid. He ate until he was full, then began to scoop dates into his clothes. The owner of the orchard came, snatched his garment, tied him to a palm tree, took a splinter, and hurt him severely with beating. Then he brought him to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of God, I found this man in my orchard; he ate until he was full, then began to scoop dates into his clothes.” The other man said: “O Messenger of God, my companion and I came while we were hungry. I went down, but my companion was afraid. I ate and took some for my companion. Then this man came and did such-and-such to me and such-and-such.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Go and give him his garment back, and measure out for him a wasq in place of what you beat him for.”
