✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khattab appointed Muʿadh over Syria. He wrote to him: “Give the people their stipends and lead them in raids.” While he was giving the people, at the end of the day, a man from the countryside came from such-and-such a place and said to him, “O Muʿadh, who will see to my stipend? I am a man from the countryside from such-and-such a place. Perhaps I will return to my family before nightfall.” He said, “By God, I will not give you until I give these,” meaning the people of the city. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “All the prophets will enter Paradise before David and Solomon by two thousand years. The poor of the Muslims will enter Paradise before their rich by forty years. The righteous slaves will enter Paradise before the free by forty years. The people of cities will enter Paradise before the people of villages by forty years. Cities excel by the Friday prayer, the congregational prayers, and the circles of remembrance. When affliction comes, they alone are singled out for it.”
