✧ A delegation of the Christians of Najrān came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: sixty riders, among them twenty-four of their nobles. Of those twenty-four, three were the ones to whom their affairs reverted: al-ʿĀqib, the trustee of the people and man of judgment, holder of their counsel, without whose opinion and command they acted not—his name was ʿAbd al-Masīḥ; al-Sayyid, their scholar, keeper of their baggage and gathering place; and Abū Ḥārithah b. ʿAlqamah, brother of Bakr b. Wāʾil, their bishop, learned man, imam, and keeper of their places of worship. Abū Ḥārithah had been honored among them until his knowledge of their religion was esteemed. The kings of Byzantium, being Christians, had honored him, accepted him, built churches for him, and lavished honors upon him because of what reached them of his striving in their religion. When they set out from Najrān toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Ḥārithah sat on his mule, heading toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with a brother of his called Kurz b. ʿAlqamah riding at his side. When Abū Ḥārithah’s mule stumbled, Kurz said: “May the far one perish,” meaning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: “Rather you have perished.” He said: “And why, brother?” He said: “By Allah, he is the Prophet we have been awaiting.” Kurz said to him: “What prevents you, since you know this?” He said: “What these people have done for us: they honored us, put us in command, and showed us generosity, yet they refused anything but opposition to him. If I did otherwise, they would strip from us everything you see.” His brother Kurz b. ʿAlqamah concealed this about him.
