✧ A man came to Umar b. al-Khattab and said: 'The hyena has eaten us.' Mis'ar said: meaning the year [of drought]. Umar asked him: 'From whom are you?' He kept asking about his lineage until he recognized him, and he turned out to be wealthy. Umar said: 'If a man had a valley or two valleys, he would seek a third.' Ibn Abbas said: 'Nothing fills the belly of the son of Adam except dust, then God turns in mercy to whoever repents.' Umar said to Ibn Abbas: 'From whom did you hear this?' He said: 'From Ubayy b. Ka'b.' He said: 'Then when it is morning, come to me.' So he went early to his mother, Umm al-Fadl, and mentioned that to her. She said: 'What do you have to do with speaking in Umar's presence?' Ibn Abbas feared that Ubayy might have forgotten. His mother said to him: 'Ubayy is unlikely to have forgotten.' He went early to Umar, who had a whip with him. They went to Ubayy, who came out to them after performing ablution. He said: 'I had a discharge of madhy, so I washed my penis'—or 'my private part'—Mis'ar was unsure. Umar said: 'Is that sufficient?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Did you hear it from the Messenger of God ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' And he asked him about what Ibn Abbas had said, and he confirmed it.
