✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, whenever he left his house, would pass by the Mothers of the Believers and greet them before coming to his gathering. When he returned to his house, he would pass by them. Every time he passed, he found a man sitting at ʿĀʾishah’s door. He said to him, “Why do I see you sitting here?” He said, “A right that I am seeking from the Mother of the Believers.” So ʿUmar entered upon her and said, “O Mother of the Believers, is seven thousand not sufficient for you each year?” She said, “Yes, but I have obligations, and I heard Abu al-Qāsim ﷺ say: ‘Whoever has a debt that concerns him to repay, or intends to repay it, will never cease to have a guardian from God with him.’ So I love that a guardian from God should never cease to be with me.”
