✧ When ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb was stabbed and ordered the consultative council, his daughter Ḥafṣah entered upon him and said: “O father, the people are saying that these men whom you have placed in the council are not satisfactory?” He said: “Support me.” So they supported him, while he was in his condition, and he said: “What could they say about ʿUthmān? I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘On the day ʿUthmān dies, the angels of heaven will pray over him.’ I said: ‘For ʿUthmān specifically or for the people generally?’ He said: ‘Rather for ʿUthmān specifically.’” He said: “And what could they say about ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf? I saw the Prophet ﷺ when he was severely hungry, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came with two loaves of bread between which was fat, and he placed them before the Messenger of God ﷺ. I saw the Prophet ﷺ when his saddle fell on a cold night, and he said: ‘Who will set my saddle right and have Paradise?’ Ṭalḥah rushed to the saddle and set it right, and the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘You have Paradise owed by me, O Ṭalḥah, tomorrow.’ What could they say about al-Zubayr? I saw the Prophet ﷺ when he slept, and he kept fanning the face of the Prophet ﷺ until he woke up. The Prophet ﷺ said to him: ‘Have you not ceased, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh?’ He said: ‘I have not ceased, may my father and mother be your ransom.’ He said: ‘This is Gabriel conveying peace to you and saying to you: I am bound to fan away from your face the sparks of Hell on the Day of Resurrection.’ What could they say about ʿAlī? I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘O ʿAlī, your hand is with my hand on the Day of Resurrection; you will enter with me wherever I enter.’”
