✧ When the Prophet ﷺ became gravely ill, and ʿĀʾishah and Ḥafṣah were with him, ʿAlī entered. When the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he raised his head and said: "Come close to me, come close to me," and he leaned him against himself. He remained with him until he passed away. When he died, ʿAlī stood up and locked the door. Al-ʿAbbās came with the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and they stood at the door. ʿAlī kept saying: "You were always good in life and good in death," and his fragrance spread, a pleasant scent the like of which they had never experienced. Someone said: "It is the scent of your longing, like the longing of a woman. Turn to your companion." ʿAlī said: "Let al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās enter to me." The Anṣār said: "We adjure you by God for our share in the Messenger of God," so they let in a man from among them called Aws b. Khawlī, carrying a water jar in one of his hands. They heard a voice in the house: "Do not strip the Messenger of God ﷺ; wash him as he is in his shirt." So ʿAlī washed him, inserting his hand under the shirt, while al-Faḍl held the garment away from him and the Anṣārī poured water. On ʿAlī's hand was a cloth, inserting his hand under the shirt.
