✧ Jibril came to the Prophet ﷺ at a time other than his usual time. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up to meet him and said: "O Jibril, why do I see your color changed?" He replied: "I have not come to you except that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me regarding the keys of the Fire." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Jibril, describe the Fire to me and describe Jahannam to me." Jibril said: "Indeed, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded Jahannam and it was kindled for a thousand years until it turned white. Then He commanded and it was kindled for a thousand years until it turned red. Then He commanded and it was kindled for a thousand years until it turned black. So it is black and dark; its sparks do not give light, and its flames are not extinguished. By the One who sent you with the truth, if an opening the size of a needle's eye were opened from Jahannam, everyone on earth would die from its heat. By the One who sent you with the truth, if a garment from the garments of the Fire were hung between heaven and earth, everyone on earth would die from its heat. By the One who sent you with the truth, if one of the keepers of Jahannam were to appear before the people of this world and they looked at him, everyone on earth would die from the ugliness of his face and the stench of his odor. By the One who sent you with the truth, if a single link of the chain of the people of the Fire, which Allah described in His Book, were placed on the mountains of this world, they would crumble and not come together again until they reach the lowest earth." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Enough, O Jibril, lest my heart split and I die." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at Jibril while he was weeping and said: "Do you weep, O Jibril, while you are with Allah in the station that you are?" He said: "Why should I not weep? I am the most deserving of weeping. Perhaps I am, in Allah's knowledge, not in the state I am currently in, and I do not know; perhaps I will be tested as Iblis was tested, for he was among the angels. And what do I know? Perhaps I will be tested as Harut and Marut were tested." He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wept and Jibril ﷺ wept, and they continued weeping until they were called: "O Jibril and O Muhammad, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has granted you both safety from disobeying Him." Then Jibril ﷺ ascended, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and passed by a group of the Ansar who were laughing and playing. He said: "Do you laugh while Jahannam is behind you? If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much, and you would not be able to swallow food and drink, and you would go out to the high places crying out to Allah, Mighty and Majestic." Then he was called: "O Muhammad, do not make My servants despair. I have sent you as a facilitator, not as one who makes things difficult." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Be moderate and draw near."
