حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْبَلَدِيُّ، قَالَ: نَا ابْنُ عَائِشَةَ قَالَ: نَا دُرَيْدُ بْنُ مُجَاشِعٍ، عَنْ غَالِبٍ الْقَطَّانِ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ الْأَحْنَفِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ:
قَالَ لِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ: " يَا أَحْنَفُ، مَنْ كَثُرَ ضَحِكُهُ قَلَّتْ هَيْبَتُهُ، مَنْ مَزَحَ اسْتُخِفَّ بِهِ، وَمَنْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ عُرِفَ بِهِ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ كَلَامُهُ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ، وَمَنْ كَثُرَ سَقَطُهُ قَلَّ حَيَاؤُهُ، وَمَنْ قَلَّ حَيَاؤُهُ قَلَّ وَرَعُهُ، وَمَنْ قَلَّ وَرَعُهُ مَاتَ قَلْبُهُ
Translation

✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said to me: “O Aḥnaf, whoever laughs a lot loses dignity; whoever jokes is belittled; whoever does something excessively becomes known for it; whoever talks a lot makes many slips; whoever makes many slips loses modesty; whoever loses modesty loses scrupulousness; and whoever loses scrupulousness, his heart dies.”
