✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military expedition, and they met the enemy and pressed on in killing until they came to the children. When the expedition returned, word of that reached the Prophet ﷺ. He said: Did I not forbid you? They said: They are only the children of the polytheists. He said: Are not the best of you the children of the polytheists? Then he ordered a caller to announce: Verily, every newborn is born upon the fitrah.

machine translationIt is a well-known, established ḥadīth, though there is some concern about it, because ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, Abū ʿAbdillāh b. Mandah, Abū Dāwūd and others denied that al-Ḥasan heard anything from al-Aswad.
