✧ ‘Umar b. al-Khattab escorted us when we set out for Kufah on foot, leading a donkey or a she-donkey. We said: O Commander of the Faithful, we adjure you by Allah, do ride. But he refused, until we had gone three or four miles. Then some of us said to one another: You have made things hard for the Commander of the Faithful. So we dismounted. One of them said: Why do you think I walked with you to this place? They said: You intended thereby to honor us and safeguard the Ansar. He said: That is so, but besides that, what else? I said: We do not know. He said: You will come to a people who will ask you to feed them with narrations, so reduce the narration from the Messenger of Allah, and I am your partner in that.
