✧ When Umar was stabbed, it was said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, appoint a successor, for if your shepherd came to you having left your flock untended, you would say: Have you left my sheep without a shepherd? So how about the community of Muhammad ﷺ? Umar said: If I leave it, one better than me left it—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—and if I appoint, one better than me appointed—meaning Abu Bakr. Then he said: The consultation is to these six with whom the Prophet ﷺ died while he was pleased with them: Uthman, Ali, Talhah, al-Zubayr, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, and Sa'd.
