✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ to pledge allegiance to him. He stipulated to me: 'You must testify that there is no god but God and that Muḥammad is His servant and Messenger, perform the five prayers, fast Ramadan, pay zakah, perform pilgrimage to the House, and strive in the way of God.' I said: 'O Messenger of God, there are two that I cannot do. By God, I have only ten she-camels, the milk animals of my family and their burden carriers. As for jihad, they claim that whoever flees incurs God’s wrath. I fear that when battle is present, my soul will become greedy and I will hate death.' The Messenger of God ﷺ withdrew his hand, then shook it, then said: 'No charity and no jihad — then with what will you enter Paradise?' So I pledged allegiance to him on all of them.
