What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationIt is not continuous (muttaṣil), because al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's hearing from Abū Mūsā is not established, and ʿĪsā b. Sinān is weak (ḍaʿīf), not to be used as proof.

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110
  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translationIt is neither continuous (muttaṣil) nor strong.

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationIt has two defects. One is that al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān's hearing from Abū Mūsā is not established. The second is that ʿĪsā b. Sinān is weak (ḍaʿīf).

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationAl-Athram said: I said to Abū ʿAbdullāh (Aḥmad) about Abū Sinān ʿĪsā b. Sinān, and he declared him weak. Yaʿqūb b. Shaybah reported from Ibn Maʿīn: lax in hadith (layyin al-ḥadīth). A group reported from Ibn Maʿīn: weak in hadith (ḍaʿīf al-ḥadīth). Abū Zurʿah said: he mixes things up (mukhalliṭ), weak in hadith. Abū Ḥātim said: not strong in hadith. Al-ʿIjlī said: there is no harm in him. Al-Nasāʾī said: weak. Ibn Khirāsh said: truthful (ṣadūq), and at another time he said: there is something objectionable (nakirah) in his hadith. Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt. Al-Kinānī reported from Abū Ḥāzim: his hadith is written down but not used as proof.

machine translationGood (ḥasan), suitable for use as proof.

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110
  • Sulaymān b. Aḥmad al-Ṭabarānī

machine translationIt is not narrated from Abū Mūsā except by this chain; ʿĪsā b. Sinān was alone in narrating it.

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationHe recorded in the Book of Funerals a hadith with this ʿĪsā b. Sinān in its chain and graded it good (ḥasan).

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110

machine translationHe declared it defective because of ʿĪsā b. Sinān, whom Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn declared weak.

    in المعجم الأوسط, p. 1110
  • Maghlaṭay

machine translationAs for the statement of Abū Dāwūd, "This hadith has been narrated from Abū Mūsā..." to the end, meaning the version recorded by Ibn Mājah in the narration of al-Asadābādhī from al-Muqawwimī, which is not established in our narration: it is as he said, weak (ḍaʿīf) and broken (munqaṭiʿ). One might understand from this that it has no supporting report, but that is not so, because al-Ṭabarānī mentioned in al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, from the hadith of Yazīd b. Abī Ziyād, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, from Bilāl: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to wipe over the leather socks and the woolen socks.
