Jami' al-Saghir / Jam' al-Jawami' (al-Suyuti) 2-3195b

Translation

✧ A young man wearing white clothes—and that was near the end of the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—came to him and said, "Are you the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes." He said, "May I come near you?" He said: "Come near me." So he placed his hand on his knees and said, "Are you the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes"—he said it twice. He said, "What is Islam?" He said: "You testify that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; you establish prayer, give zakah, fast Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the House." He said, "Then what is faith?" He said: "You believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and all of destiny." He said, "Then what is excellence?" He said: "You worship Allah as though you see Him; for if you do not see Him, He sees you." [He said], "If I do that, then am I excellent and Muslim?" He said: "Yes." Umar said: The Prophet of Allah ﷺ narrated to me: "Musa met Adam and said, 'Are you Adam, whom Allah created with His hand and before whom He made His angels prostrate? Were it not for what you committed, no one from your offspring would enter the Fire.' He said, 'Are you Musa, whom Allah chose for His message and His speech? How can you blame me for a matter that had been written against me before I was created?' So they argued, and Adam overcame Musa in argument."
