He said: A plague broke out in Syria during the time of ʿUmar ؓ, until a man could not lift his legs. So ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ, who was the governor of Syria at that time, stood up and said: "Disperse from this scourge into these mountains and this open desert." Then Shuraḥbīl b. Ḥasanah said: "Rather, it is the mercy of your Lord, the supplication of your Prophet, and the death of the righteous before you. I accepted Islam with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and this man is more astray than the donkey of his family." He said: Then Muʿādh b. Jabal said, and I heard him say it: "O Allah, let the family of Muʿādh have their share of this affliction." He said: Then two of his wives were struck by the plague and died, until a son of his was struck, and he went in to him, and said: {The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.} [Āl ʿImrān: 60] He said: {You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient.} [al-Ṣāffāt: 102] He said: Then that son of his died and he buried him. He said: Then Muʿādh was struck, and he would fall unconscious, and when he recovered he would say: "My Lord, envelop me with Your enveloping, for by Your might, You know that I love You." He said: Then he would fall unconscious, and when he recovered he would say the same.
