أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو الْحَسَنِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ, أَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ, نَا عُبَيْدُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ, نَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ, نَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ, نَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ, مَوْلَى عُفْرَةَ, عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ, كَذَا
قَالَ: كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: " يَا غُلَامُ, أَلَا أُعَلِّمُكَ كَلِمَاتٍ لَعَلَّ اللهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَكَ بِهِنَّ؟ " قُلْتُ: بَلَى, يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ, قَالَ: " احْفَظِ اللهَ يَحْفَظْكَ, احْفَظِ اللهَ تَجِدْهُ أَمَامَكَ, تَعَرَّفْ إِلَى اللهِ فِي الرَّخَاءِ يَعْرِفْكَ فِي الشِّدَّةِ, إِذَا سَأَلْتَ فَاسْأَلِ اللهَ, وَإِذَا اسْتَعَنْتَ فَاسْتَعِنْ بِاللهِ, قَدْ جَفَّ الْقَلَمُ بِمَا هُوَ كَائِنٌ, فَلَوِ اجْتَمَعَ الْخَلْقُ عَلَى أَنْ يَنْفَعُوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَكْتُبْهُ اللهُ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ لَمْ يَسْتَطِيعُوا, وَلَوِ اجْتَمَعَ الْخَلْقُ أَنْ يَضُرُّوكَ بِشَيْءٍ لَمْ يَكْتُبْهُ اللهُ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ لَمْ يَسْتَطِيعُوا, فَإِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ تَعْمَلَ لِلَّهِ بِالرِّضَا وَالْيَقِينِ فَافْعَلْ, وَإِنْ لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ فَإِنَّ فِي الصَّبْرِ عَلَى مَا تَكْرَهُ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا, وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ النَّصْرَ مَعَ الصَّبْرِ, وَأَنَّ الْفَرَجَ مَعَ الْكَرْبِ, وَأَنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا "

He said: I was riding behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said: "O boy, shall I not teach you some words by which Allah may perhaps benefit you?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. Get to know Allah in times of ease and He will know you in times of hardship. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek help, seek help from Allah. The pen has dried with what will be. If the whole of creation were to gather to benefit you with something that Allah has not written for you in the Mother of the Book, they would not be able to; and if the whole of creation were to gather to harm you with something that Allah has not written for you in the Mother of the Book, they would not be able to. So if you are able to act for Allah with contentment and certainty, then do so; and if you are not able, then there is much good in patience over what you dislike. And know that victory comes with patience, relief with distress, and that with hardship there is ease."
