He said: "If a hadith is narrated to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then hold fast to it (fazdahir bihi)" — from Abū al-ʿĀliyah. And in the narration of al-Shaʿrānī, he said: from Khālid al-Ḥadhdhāʾ, from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, he said: "If a hadith is narrated to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then hold fast to it." Al-Faḍl said: "That is, safeguard it." Al-Bayhaqī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "Part of honouring Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and honouring His Messenger ﷺ is that no book, nor any household item, be placed on top of a copy of the Qurʾān or of the comprehensive collections of the Sunan; that dust be shaken off it when it settles on it; that no one wipe his hand from food or anything else with a sheet on which the mention of Allah, Exalted is He, or the mention of His Messenger ﷺ appears; and that he not tear it into pieces. Rather, if he wants to put it out of use, let him wash it with water until the writing is gone from it. If he burns it with fire, there is no harm: ʿUthmān ؓ burned copies that contained Qurʾānic verses and readings that had been abrogated, and no one objected to him for it. And Allah knows best." Al-Bayhaqī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: and he mentioned from al-Ḥalīmī ؓ that he said: "In my view, if he washes it with water and does not burn it, that is better, because of the ugliness in burning it. This differs from what ʿUthmān ordered of burning the copies that contradicted what they had agreed upon, because he feared strife from them, and of retaining what had become abrogated in its script, since in burning them there was haste to destroy them. And from this chapter is that a dirham bearing the name of Allah and the name of His Messenger ﷺ should not be broken. It has come from the Prophet ﷺ that he forbade breaking the coin of the Muslims that is current among them, except for a fault. The fault is that it be counterfeit, so it is broken lest a Muslim be deceived by it. The reason for the prohibition of breaking it is that it is like tearing up a sheet on which the mention of Allah or the mention of His Messenger ﷺ appears, since the letters are cut up and the words scattered, and in that is disdain for the worth of what is written. And whenever it is broken for a valid excuse, the sin of the breaking is on the one who minted it, because he is the one who deceived and cheated, and so made it necessary to break it in order to expose the fraud. And Allah knows best."
