What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationAs for the hadith, many have relied on it in opposition [to the other view]. The point of evidence in it is his saying, "the ghusl is better (afḍal)", for this implies that wuḍūʾ and ghusl share in the basic merit, and so it necessitates that wuḍūʾ suffices. This hadith has several routes, the best known and strongest of which is the narration of al-Ḥasan from Samurah, which was recorded by the authors of the three Sunan, Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Ḥibbān. It has two defects (ʿillah): one is the ʿanʿanah of al-Ḥasan, and the other is that there is disagreement about it from him. Ibn Mājah recorded it from Anas, al-Ṭabarānī from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Samurah, al-Bazzār from Abū Saʿīd, and Ibn ʿAdī from Jābir, and all of them are weak (ḍaʿīf).

machine translationAl-Ḥasan's hearing from Samurah is disputed.

  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī

machine translationIt has been said that al-Ḥasan did not hear anything from Samurah and did not meet him. It has also been said that he did hear from him, and some specified his hearing of the hadith of the ʿaqīqah, as al-Nasāʾī mentioned.

    machine translationA good (ḥasan) hadith.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThe hadith of al-Ḥasan from Samurah, even though al-Ḥasan did not hear from Samurah, as they say, except the hadith of the ʿaqīqah, is the best of them in chain of transmission. It has been reported that he heard from Samurah other than the hadith of the ʿaqīqah.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationWhoever takes the narration of al-Ḥasan from Samurah as connected (muttaṣil) declares this hadith sound (ṣaḥīḥ). I say: this is the position of ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, as al-Bukhārī, al-Tirmidhī, al-Ḥākim and others transmitted from him.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationIt has two defects (ʿillah): one is that it is from the ʿanʿanah of al-Ḥasan, and the other is that there is disagreement about it from him.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationBoth are sound (ṣaḥīḥ): Hammām is trustworthy (thiqah) and he connected it, while Abān did not connect it.

machine translationThis hadith is narrated through routes, the best of which is the route of al-Ḥasan from Samurah.
