machine translationHe was asked about the hadith of Kabshah bint Kaʿb b. Mālik, from Abū Qatādah, from the Prophet ﷺ, about the cat: that he tilted the vessel for it, and that it is not impure. He said: Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Mālik b. Anas narrated it from Isḥāq and preserved its chain, saying: from Ḥumaydah bint ʿUbayd b. Rifāʿah, from Kabshah bint Kaʿb b. Mālik, who was married to Ibn Abī Qatādah, from Abū Qatādah. Yūnus b. ʿUbayd and Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim narrated it from Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah, from Umm Yaḥyā, who is Ḥumaydah bint ʿUbayd and the wife of Isḥāq b. ʿAbdullāh, from her maternal aunt the daughter of Kaʿb, from Abū Qatādah. Hammām b. Yaḥyā and Ibrāhīm b. Abī Yaḥyā narrated it likewise. Hishām b. ʿUrwah narrated it from Isḥāq, and there is disagreement about him. Ibn Jurayj narrated it from Hishām, from Isḥāq, from his wife, from her mother, from Abū Qatādah, and this narration agrees with the narration of Mālik and those who followed him. Ibn Numayr narrated it from Hishām similarly. Abū Muʿāwiyah said, from Hishām, from Isḥāq of the Banū Zurayq, from Abū Qatādah, so he dropped Isḥāq's wife Ḥumaydah from the chain. ʿAbdullāh b. Idrīs and ʿAbdullāh b. Dāwūd al-Kharībī narrated it from Hishām, from Isḥāq, from Abū Qatādah, mentioning no one between them. Wakīʿ narrated it from Hishām, and ʿAlī b. al-Mubārak from Isḥāq, from the wife of ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah, from Abū Qatādah; he agreed with Abū Muʿāwiyah in his narration from Hishām and dropped Isḥāq's wife from the chain. Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it from Isḥāq, from the wife of Abū Qatādah, dropping a woman from the chain. Naṣr b. ʿAlī said, from Ibn ʿUyaynah, from Isḥāq, from the wife of Abū Qatādah, or from a woman, from the wife of Abū Qatādah, from Abū Qatādah. If he preserved this from Ibn ʿUyaynah, then he has come with the correct version. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar al-ʿUmarī narrated from Isḥāq, from Anas, from Abū Qatādah, and he erred in mentioning Anas. Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated it from Isḥāq, from Abū Qatādah, as a mursal report. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar narrated it from Isḥāq, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from the Prophet ﷺ; Ismāʿīl b. ʿAyyāsh said this from him, and he erred in mentioning Abū Saʿīd. All of these raised it to the Prophet ﷺ. ʿIkrimah and ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Qatādah narrated it from Abū Qatādah as a mawqūf report. Its being raised (marfūʿ) is sound, and perhaps whoever made it mawqūf did not ask Abū Qatādah whether he had anything from the Prophet ﷺ on it or not, because they only related Abū Qatādah's action. The best of them in chain is what Mālik narrated from Isḥāq, from his wife, from her mother, from Abū Qatādah; he preserved the names of the women and their lineages, narrated it well, and raised it to the Prophet ﷺ.

وأعله ابن منده بأن حميدة وخالتها كبشة محلهما محل الجهالة ولا يعرف لهما إلا هذا الحديث

machine translationIbn Mandah found it defective (aʿallahu), because Ḥumaydah and her maternal aunt Kabshah have the status of being unknown (jahālah), and nothing is known of them except this hadith.

machine translationPerhaps whoever declared it sound relied on Mālik's having included it, and that everyone Mālik included is trustworthy (thiqah) according to Ibn Maʿīn, if that is what is authentically reported from him. If one follows this method in authenticating it, I mean Mālik's including it, then so be it; otherwise the statement is what Ibn Mandah said.
