What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī

machine translationThis hadith has been narrated through several routes from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, none of which is established.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 4661
  • ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Jawzī

machine translationThe hadiths of this chapter are open to criticism, for they are mursal reports (marāsīl) and weak (ḍaʿīf). Abū ʿUbaydah did not hear from his father, nor did ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; al-Qāsim did not hear from Ibn Masʿūd, nor did ʿAwn b. ʿAbdullāh. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated it with various wordings and with weak chains, among them Ibn ʿAyyāsh, Muḥammad b. Abī Laylā, al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah and Ibn al-Marzubān, all of whom are weak.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 4661

machine translationWhat appears is that the hadith of Ibn Masʿūd, taken with all its routes together, has a basis; rather, it is a good (ḥasan) hadith that may be used as evidence, though there is a difference in its wording.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 4661
  • Shafiʿī

machine translationAmong the routes of this hadith from Ibn Masʿūd, none is connected (mawṣūl).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 4661

machine translationIt is broken (munqaṭiʿ), except that its origin is well known among a group of scholars who received it with acceptance and built many of its branches upon it.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 4661
  • Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationIbn Ḥazm declared it defective on account of a break in the chain (inqiṭāʿ).
