What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThere is inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in its chain of transmission, and it is the best of what has been narrated as raised to the Prophet (marfūʿ) on this topic.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationThis is a hadith about whose chain and whose attribution to the Prophet ﷺ there is disagreement concerning al-Zuhrī.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • al-Bukhari

  • Qurṭubī

machine translationIt has been narrated as a statement of a Companion (mawqūf), and those who narrated it as attributed to the Prophet (musnad) are trustworthy.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThere is inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in the chain of this hadith, and in it is Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb al-Ghāfiqī, about whom al-Nasāʾī said: not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationI do not know which of the two is more sound, meaning the narration of Yaḥyā b. Ayyūb from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Bakr from al-Zuhrī from Sālim with it, from her, as raised (marfūʿ), and the narration of Isḥāq b. Ḥāzim from ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Bakr from Sālim without the intermediary of al-Zuhrī; but the halted version (mawqūf) is more likely, that is, the narration of al-Zuhrī from Ḥamzah b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from her, as her own statement, halted (mawqūf).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Abū Daʾūd

machine translationIts attribution to the Prophet ﷺ (raf') is not sound.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationThe mawqūf version is more sound.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationAl-Nasāʾī gave preference to the halted version (mawqūf) after going into great detail in citing its routes.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

machine translationThe correct view in my opinion is that it is halted (mawqūf), and its attribution to the Prophet (raf') is not sound.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Bayhaqī

machine translationIts narrators are trustworthy (thiqāt), except that it has been narrated as halted (mawqūf).

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Aḥmad ibn Shuʿayb al-Nasāʾī

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationThis was narrated from al-Zuhrī from Ḥamzah b. ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar from Ḥafṣah as her own statement, and that is more likely in my view.

    in سنن النسائي, p. 2335
