machine translationI asked my father about a hadith narrated by al-Zuhrī, Usāmah b. Zayd, Nāfiʿ, Ibn Isḥāq and al-Walīd b. Kathīr, from Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbdillāh b. Ḥunayn, from his father, from ʿAlī: "The Prophet ﷺ forbade me to recite while bowing" (the hadith). And it was narrated by al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿUthmān, Dāwūd b. Qays al-Farrāʾ and Ibn ʿAjlān, from Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbdillāh b. Ḥunayn, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿAlī. Which of the two is correct? My father said: Those who narrated from his father did not say "I heard ʿAlī" except some of them, and these three are of unknown reliability (mastūr), and an addition is accepted from a trustworthy narrator (thiqah). Ibn ʿAjlān is trustworthy (thiqah), and al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. ʿUthmān is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī). Usāmah was not satisfied until he narrated from Ibrāhīm, and then narrated from ʿAbdullāh b. Ḥunayn himself, and Usāmah is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī). My father said on another occasion: al-Zuhrī is the better memorizer.
